This project was one of my favorites. It focused on attention to detail and the understanding of 3D form. Learning to translate a three-dimensional form onto a two-dimensional piece of paper was a very gratifying process. Before even attempting to draw the glass objects that each student chose, we had to successfully draw a composition with 4 ellipses of set ratios (1:2, 1:3, 1:4, and 1:5), a plane, a cube, and a sphere. No restarting was allowed, hands could not touch the page, and rulers and erasers were prohibited.
Once these four forms were perfected over many weeks, we were permitted to move on to our individual objects. If you look closely, you are able to see how the glass that I drew is made up entirely of the four forms mentioned previously. The second drawing of the glass (the one on its side) was an additional project that I took on, which ultimately earned me a Design Excellence Award, something that I am still very proud of.
I included some process images at the bottom of this page that will hopefully aid in understanding what exactly was done to make up these pieces.
Drawings are all 18”x24”
