Shadow Study

Visual Communication II 2024

This project is a continuation of the Complex Object Drawings from Design Drawing. In this course our first goal was to use Adobe Illustrator to recreate our glass drawings, but this time they had to be mathematically correct. To achieve this we measured all aspects of the glass with a caliper and translated them to our wireframe. Once the wireframe was completed we removed excess measurement lines and unnecessary parts of ellipses and emphasized the entire glass. (this means increasing the stroke of closer pieces of glass and decreasing those further away)

The second portion of this project is the shadow study itself. Our objects were placed on light boxes and all other lights were turned off. This allowed us to focus entirely on light and shadow and the nuances caused by light going through glass. Gestural gesso paintings were done first to get a general idea of where shadows existed on the glass and then everything was moved into Illustrator and cleaned up from there.

Finals are all 11”x14”
