Typeface Design

Letterform 2023

The entire class of Letterform was focused on typography and how type is designed. In this course, I designed the beginning of my very own typeface. To simplify things I undertook a san serif typeface that somewhat resembles Helvetica. The horizontal and vertical weights, subtle shifts in height on curved letterforms, and even the tittle of the i are just a few of the many decisions that went into the creation of this typeface.

It all started with an H and an n, neutral letters, and the rest was based on that. Letters were painted first and then transferred to Illustrator. Ultimately, the goal was to spell out “imagination” and create a paragraph of randomized letters. The paragraph had to be conscious of leading, kerning, and rag.

Finals are 11”x14”
